The accuracy of Cone-beam computed tomography in the detection of the number of root canals: An in vitro study

Introduction: Efficacious root canal treatment requires identification of all root canals. The inability of dentists to locate all root canals could lead to the failure of endodontic treatment. consequently, the necessity for an accurate diagnostic device to detect all root canals is tangible.  The aim of the present study was to examine the accuracy of Cone Beam Computed Tomography as a diagnostic tool in detecting root canals in maxillary first premolars in a selected Iranian population.
Materials & Methods: In this in vitro study,48 human extracted maxillary first premolar teeth were scanned by CBCT. Sectional method was chosen as the gold standard in current study, so all teeth were sectioned after scanning. CBCT scans were observed by an oral and maxillofacial radiologist, and the sections were evaluated by an endodontist using stereomicroscope. At that point, collected data were entered into SPSS 22 and analyzed by kappa coefficient and chi-square test. Significance level was set at 0.05.
Results: The agreement between CBCT and sectional method for root canal detection was 97.2% which is (95.8% in the first section, 97.9% in the second and third section), p<0.001 was considered significant.
Conclusion: Unlike other low-dose radiation imaging techniques which do not provide sufficient data, the CBCT seems to be a very reliable and noninvasive measuring tool that can be used in detecting root canals.
