Abstract

Introduction: The aim of this study was to recognize and investigate the expectations of patients and their parents from orthodontic treatment in order to increase the satisfaction from treatment outcome and enhance the patients’ cooperation in Babol in 2017.
Materials & Methods: Totally, 200 people (100 patients aged 12-18 with one of their parents) who were attending for their first orthodontic treatment session participated in this cross-sectional study. Participants completed a self-administered questionnaire which was translated by Forward-Backward method from English to Persian language. Data were analyzed using SPSS 22 through descriptive statistics and t-tests.
Results: The most important expectations of patients and their parents from the first appointment of orthodontic treatment were check -up, diagnosis, discussion about treatment, and oral hygiene checking. Patients’ expectations from first appointment were higher than their parents in “brace being fitted” (p=0.001), lower in “have a discussion about treatment plan” (p=0.006), “have x-rays” (p=0.003), and “have oral hygiene checked” (p=0.03). The highest expectation of patients as well as their parents from the type of orthodontic treatment was fixed braces. The main expectation of patients and parents from orthodontic treatment was the demand for straightening teeth and improving aesthetics.
Conclusion: Parents than patients had more reasonable expectations from the first appointment of orthodontic treatment. Parents had higher expectations from orthodontic treatment benefits. Age and gender did not have significant effect on the type and level of expectations of parents and patients.

Abstract

Introduction: Regarding the lack of data on the  frequency of oral cancer in Babol, the aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of oral cancer in Babol during 2012-2016.
Materials & Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study was performed using pathology sheet records of oral cancer patients during 2012-2016. Survival status of patients was collected through telephone contact.
Results: The mean age of 48 patients was 62.2% (22-95) years, and 64.2% were male. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) was the most prevalent malignancy, and the most common site was tongue followed by pharynx. Frequency of oral cancer patients was 9 (18.8%), 9 (18.8%), 10 (20.8%), 12 (25%) and 8 (16.7%) patients from 2012 to 2016, respectively.
Conclusion: SCC, specifically on the tongue was the most frequent malignancy. It seems that the oral cancer prevention training is necessary for elderly adults.

Abstract

Introduction: Since the first permanent molar (FPM) as a first permanent tooth erupts between 6-7 years old and has a long period of eruption, it is the most caries prone tooth. One of the problems is inadequate knowledge of parents about the eruption time of the FPM; because these teeth erupt behind the deciduous teeth without a primary successor. In the present study, mothers' knowledge about its eruption time and its effect on health of these teeth was evaluated.
Materials & Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 406 schoolchildren (7-9 years old) and their mothers using multi-stage sampling in Babol in 2017. Mothers completed the check list according to the study objectives. Clinical status of FPM was measured using DMFT (Decayed, Missed, Filled Teeth) index. Finally, data were analyzed with SPSS 18 using t-test and chi-square. Significance level was considered as p<0.05.
Results: Mothers’ awareness about the eruption time of FPM (p<0.001) was associated with higher ratio of children with sound FPM. Mothers’ education level was the most significant contributing factor to mothers' knowledge about FPM eruption time.
Conclusion: Mothers’ education and their knowledge about the FPMs eruption time were the major predictors of FPM caries status.

Abstract

Introduction: The aim of this study  was to assess dentists’ knowledge and practice about dental radiological wastes that are dangerous to the environment.
Materials &Methods: This was a cross-sectional study  was conducted in 2018-19. All participants completed a two sections’ (knowledge and practice) checklist. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test and ANOVA. A value of P<0.05 was considered significant.
Results: Totally, 204 (73.5% general dentists and 26.5% specialist) dentists from Amol (35.8%) and Babol (64.2%) participated. The mean age of participants was 39.2 (SD± 10.9) years, and 59.2% of them were female. The average percentage of dentists’ knowledge and practice about radiological waste disposal was 42.55 and 43.12% respectively. Gender, work experience, special or general degree, and city of clinical activity had no significant effect on dentists’ knowledge and practice (P>0.05).
Conclusion: More than half of dentists had no correct knowledge and practice on how to dispose radiological wastes. It is necessary to develop specific approaches such as workshops and training classes.
