Abstract

Ameloblastic fibroma is a relatively rare benign odontogenic tumor with two neoplastic components both epithelial and ectomesenchymal. A 10-year-old girl was referred to a dentist for routine dental treatments for evaluation of the distance between mandibular right first permanent molar and mandibular right second deciduous molar and it was associated with an undesirable backward movement of erupted mandibular right first permanent molar and forward movement of mandibular right second deciduous molar. The lesion was enucleated and the material was sent for histopathologic examination. Microscopically, it was composed of neoplastic proliferation of odontogenic epithelium consisted of cords and islands in a cell-rich mesenchymal stroma, with histopathological diagnosis of ameloblastic fibroma. After 24 months of follow-up, no recurrence was observed and the mandibular right first molar was spontaneously aligned. Early diagnosis and proper management will prevent comprehensive orthodontic treatment.

Abstract

Introduction: The inclination of the occlusal plane (OP) is related to type of dental occlusion. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the inclination of occlusal plane in Class II patients treated with the upper first premolars extraction or non-extraction modalities.
Materials & Methods: Totally, forty 16-25-year-old patients (15 males and 25 females) with class II malocclusion, whose active phase of orthodontic treatment was completed using MBT with 0.022-inch slot size, were selected. Twenty patients were treated with extraction of upper first premolars and the rest were treated without any extraction. Pre- and post-treatment cephalograms were traced and several cephalometric variables were measured. The pre- and post-treatment changes of angles within each group and between two groups were compared via paired t-test and independent t-test, respectively. The statistically significant level was set at p<0.05.
Results: After treatment, functional occlusal plane (FOP) angle to sella-nasion (SN) plane angle increased in both groups (0.5 degree in extraction group and 0.6 degree in non-extraction group), which was not statistically significant in both groups. Bisecting occlusal plane (BOP) angle to SN plane one in the extraction group enhanced by 0.8 degree, which was not statistically significant, but it decreased by 0.8  degree in the non-extraction group, which was not statistically significant.
Conclusion: Although the use of extraction and non-extraction protocols for the treatment of Class II patients did not cause significant changes in the BOP-SN and FOP-SN angles, small changes in these angles can have marked clinical changes in facial harmony and occlusal relationships. Extraction decision depending on factors such as amount of crowding, incisors protrusion, etc.

Abstract

Introduction: Mental health is an inseparable part of overall health and healthcare workers have experienced mental issues during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to investigate the amount of stress undergone by dental students and its affecting factors.

Materials & Methods: This cross-sectional study included all students of Shahid Beheshti Dental School, Tehran. The data on demographic and individual-social characteristics of the participants and questions related to the perceived stress level (PSS-10 questionnaire) were collected using an online questionnaire. The results were analyzed using a T-test and the correlations in SPSS-26 (P<0.05).

Results: A total of 511 students participated in the study. The mean score of the perceived stress level was 15.9 out of 40, indicating a moderate level of perceived stress. Eleven students had suffered from COVID-19 and 13% were in close contact with those infected. Most of the students (72%) used public transportation. About 60% regularly did exercise, and the majority had enough hours of sleep. After examining the relationship between the individual factors and perceived stress level, it was revealed that the PSS was significantly lower in people who had adequate and a regular sleeping timetable (p<0.05). Furthermore, people who had contracted the COVID-19 virus (p=0.019) or had relatives who were infected (p =0.007) experienced higher levels of stress. Suffering from preexisting medical conditions was another significant factor in higher perceived stress levels (p=0.027).

Conclusion: This study indicated that students had gone through a moderate level of stress during the COVID-19 pandemic. People with systemic conditions, sleep disorders, and those who had contracted the COVID-19 virus themselves or their reletives, experienced higher levels of stress. The requirement to provide courses on stress management skills, family awareness, and use of mental health services to reduce the negative effects of this psychological burden is highly recommended .

Abstract

Introduction: Dental services are a hotspot for viral transmission. Dentists must have complete knowledge about the disease and quick access to information to combat this transmission. To prevent COVID-19 viral spreading through dental practices, dentists must be well-versed in disease and infection control measures. As a result, this study aimed to assess the knowledge of Iranian dentists on the Covid-19 pandemic.
Materials & Methods: The present study was a questionnaire-based cross-sectional survey. A modified questionnaire of a perused one was prepared, the validity of which was confirmed, and the reliability was accepted by Cronbach’s alpha test (0.86). This questionnaire was completed by133Iranian dentists and included six components: consent to participate in research, demographic information, knowledge, infection control, vaccination, and therapeutic approach. Data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, and Spearman rank correlation coefficients, and  P<0.05 was considered the level of significance.
Results: Iranian dentists are shown to have proper knowledge, but only 21.7% of participants received infection control courses; moreover, only 47% of them knew the accurate incubation period of the Virus. Dentists working in Academic clinics took more preventive measures than those working in private clinics (P value=0.023).
Conclusion: It is recommended that health care authorities ensure that dentists receive organized information and guidelines.
